A review of Mersey Mart by Tommy Dunne written on Tuesday 29th of January 2013
What a delight it was to see a newspaper report on the thing that is important Alzheimer's research at JMU and giving it a prominent place right at the top of your paper.Unlike when I attended the opening of the Florie on the 21 Jan. I have Alzheimer's and I did was asked to do a speech on what its like living with dementia at the launch of the year of dementia which was taking place in the Florrie at the same time. While it was nice that the Prince Charles came into meet some of the staff and people living with dementia I feel that the Echo and Granada reports did us a disservice because all they reported on was the Prince going into a pub and having a Guinness, now everyone remembers the Guinness but no one remembers that it was the launch of the year of dementia, they really had a chance to let people know that this is a special year to raise peoples awareness of dementia and to get rid of the stigma associated with it. I'm lucky enough to have been able to address the students at JMU who are working in the field of dementia and they were surprised to learn somethings from a person living with dementia has to offer.
So in our case from a publicity point of view: Guinness was not good for us.
p.s We also need to get away from the saying that we are Suffering from Alzheimer's I am and have never been in any pain with my Alzheimer's what i do is live with it.
Once again thank you to your news paper for bring the article to the public's attention.
