A review of Edge Hill Library by John Bohanna written on Saturday 22nd of May 2010
Lodge Lane Library now titled Edge Hill Library was the first library I visited - in absolute terror. I think it was 1950/1 I was 8 or 9 and marched with my class from Chatsworth Street school. We had been shouted at so many times that hands had to be spotless on the day of our vist and that under no circumstanes were we to talk run shout or do anything whatsoever other that what a staff member or school teacher told us. Otherwise we were to be in serious trouble. The staff were just as we had been warned of shouting and threatening (sort of quitely through gritted teeth)that in this place of absolute silence we were to keep it that way. It was a lesson I never forgot - to the point that each time I entered a library from then on I entered with a sense of fear. Recently I attended a persons 90th birthday celebration and met a woman who was a member of the staff all those years back she is now 80 and a good singer. When I told her of my fear she said 'oh yes we needed to have control'. Maybe so. Not so long ago I had reason to complain of youngsters playing football with an adult in a library a little outside of Liverpool. That would never ever of happened in Lodge Lane/Edge Hill Library even if I do sound ageist! My second visit to a library that I can remember was the main city library. Repairs were still under way from the war and we were taken into the what was called the 'International Library' it was empty of books or other fixtures but had a small sort of stage were a man stood and told us children - then sitting on the floor - that 'one day this place will be filled and it is for you to learn and enjoy as you grow older'. He was so right. Our magnificent main city library is one of my favourite place's in my life - even if I do carry some long past apprehension! .
