"Monte Arucas"

I used to obtain delivery orders for tomato shipments from the Canary Islands being shipped on the “Monte Arucas”

The ship landed its cargo every second Sunday through the season, tomato salesman and buyers from as far away as Glasgow would be there to make their purchases.

I was customs clerk for Dan Wuille a major fruit importer.

It was a mad rush to pay the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board dues, pass the customs entry and pay the customs duty, then obtain the bills of lading usually brought to Bahr Benhrend’s office from the dock and pay the freight.

As I recall deliveries were allowed from the dock before the delivery order was lodged with the counter off.

I think the ship always berthed at South One Kings dock.
